Introduction

For more than 50 years, academic studies have consistently shown that intrinsic motivation—the individual combination of values and preferences that drive us from within—are strongly linked to increased engagement, elevated performance levels and improved well-being, among a host of other positive outcomes.

Indeed, motivation theory trailblazer and serial New York Times bestselling author Daniel Pink describes intrinsic motivation as “the most important drive for high performance in just about any field,” while influential academic and Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School Amy Edmondson asserts that intrinsic motivation is one of two essential elements (along with Psychological Safety) that need to be present for people to truly excel.

Working with a team of psychologists over the course of several years, Attuned has identified 11 core intrinsic motivational needs that, in different combinations, make up each person’s unique motivational profile, and a 55-question forced-choice Intrinsic Motivation Assessment, usually taken annually, that provides the respondent with a score from 0-100 for each of these 11 motivators,

This in turn has provided us with a unique data set derived from tens of thousands of questionnaires taken over the past five years that show how motivational trends have evolved around the world during that time. And, for the very first time, we’ve used that data to create this in-depth report revealing how global motivational needs have changed since 2018, creating a one-of-a-kind snapshot of how people’s values have shifted from before to during to after the pandemic.
