What’s the difference between Intrinsic Motivation and Extrinsic Motivation?

Whether we’re working, playing sports or anything else that requires focus and effort, motivation has a huge impact on how well we perform.

When it comes to motivation, there are two main types:

Intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.

Extrinsic motivation usually comes in the form of incentives that are provided externally by other people.

In a workplace setting, these can be rewards such as:

  • A bonus

  • Extra holidays

  • Or a promotion

Or punishments, such as:

  • Criticism

  • Disciplinary action

  • Or being fired.

In short, it’s the classic carrot and stick approach.

Intrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is what drives each person from within, the individual values and preferences that make doing a particular task more meaningful.

Decades of psychological research have shown that intrinsic motivation is strongly linked to:

  • Increased engagement

  • Performance

  • And overall happiness.

By making people’s intrinsic motivations visible, Attuned helps companies align their employees goals and values with their own, creating a culture of purpose, and ultimately, making work more meaningful.
